Search Techniques

* Cut it short. The asterisk (*) can be used at the end of a word as a wildcard. This can be helpful with abbreviations. For example, "assoc*" matches "assoc.", as well as "association", "associated", etc.
* Power searches using connectors. Use AND OR and parentheses "()" for more control over your searches. Here are some examples of advanced searches:

(cats or dogs) and shelter
(child* and cancer) or leukemia

Search Tips

* Tell us where. Adding a state or a city further restricts the name search. Search just the city field to list organizations in your home town or any town.
* By any other name, a rose is as sweet, but we can't find it. The formal organization name might not be the name you know. Try to determine the organization's formal name. If they're local, just give them a call.
* But let's not be too formal. Sometimes the name might not have exactly the words you've used. Instead of giving every word in the name, try searching only a couple of the most important words.
* Sometimes too much information is a bad thing. Because organizations are sometimes in little-known suburbs, specifying the city field can return zero hits. Start with fewer fields in your search and add more if needed.
* Tell us the magic word. You can search in the name field using the tax-id known as the employer identification number (EIN) for the organization. This is a nine digit number with leading zeros if needed and no spaces or dashes. For the truly determined, you can contact the organization to get its EIN.
* Seek and Ye Shall Find. But in the case of churches and religious organizations, sometimes they're not in our database since they're not required to register as tax-deductible organizations. We'll gladly add your religous organization if you'll tell us where it is.
* We've got over 275,000 causes, but still . . . the cause might not be in our database. Check out some reasons why.

We would be happy to help you find your cause.
Write to us with what you know about it.
